A Busy Week

December 21st, 2009

Although I have not posted anything new in over a week, I wanted everyone to know I have not been slacking off (especially after reading Katharine Cartwright’s excellent blog today on “Showing Up“). I have completed two canvases which are tucked away safely right now. I will post them after Christmas morning. When you see them you’ll understand why I waited…

Meanwhile I’ve been experimenting with new ideas for the next major piece which will involve actual masks in the composition – similar to what I did with “Shadow of a Doubt“. I’m really excited about where I’m going with it, but anticipate it being a couple weeks before it comes to fruition.

I’m also experimenting with some smaller canvases – the smallest being 4″x5″. I’d had so much fun painting my daughter’s portrait on a 5″x7″ canvas with a palette knife I thought I’d see how small I could go before the palette knife becomes a liability. I hope to have a few of them ready to show later this week.

In the midst of all this, my family and I have been caught up in all the excitement that comes with the Christmas season. We’ve had several parties to attend over the past few days where we enjoyed the company of old friends while making new ones. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is this Friday! Where has 2009 gone?!?!?!?

As we prepare to enter 2010 I thought of this serigraphic edition I did back in 1992 and wanted to share it. I think its message is relevant. I hope you enjoy…

OK… now you’ve got me sitting on the edge of my seat!! What a tease you are, leaving us with intense anticipation of your latest secreted paintings and new experiments. I won’t have any fingernails left by the time you post them ;-) In the meantime, I’m visually entrhalled with your beautiful dove painting and feel a vicarious excitement over all the wonderful holiday events you’re enjoying. Peace, my friend.

I love this serigraph Don. You’ve managed to catch so much in one image. I particularly love the sense of hope in it.

The parties have begun for me too. I try to double my time in the gym to compensate. The good life is hard on the waistline and it lays waste to my ability to show up creatively – unless it’s cards and giftwrapping.

Happy Christmas to you and yours.

I am looking forward to the surprise! Meanwhile..you graphic dove pleases me!

This is a really beautiful work–reminds me of the gospel song “I’ll fly away.”

Kathy… I believe thimbles could help the issue with your fingernails, but other than that I’m afraid I can’t be of much help with the quandary you find yourself in. Thank you for your fun and supportive comment.

Margaret… Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed “Promise” and the message I was trying to get across. FYI, if I double my time in the gym it will equal the amount of time I spend in the gym already. How’s that for a math problem? :-D

Celeste… Your pleasure is my pleasure… thank you!

Hallie… Thank you. I hadn’t thought of that song in regards to this piece, but it fits. An interesting side note: The summer after I created “Promise” I picked up a CD in the Smoky Mountains that included bluegrass versions of old gospel songs done on traditional Appalachian musical instruments. It’s fun to get it out once and awhile to drive my kids nuts. My favorite song on that CD is “I’ll Fly Away”.

    Merry Christmas to you all!

    -Don

    Hmmm… a math problem. I love it! My solution is this: 0 x 0 = 0.
Merry Christmas, Don and all the Michaels!

  7. Don Michael, Jr. Said:

Kathy, you were SO close. But, remember we are doubling my previous time in the gym. :-P

  8. Kathy Said:

Oh! I mis-read your comment. Oops. Let’s try this:
    2×0 = 0

Love the serigraph, most appropriate! I got your lovely card just before leaving town…. what a nice surprise, thank you! Looking forward to the revealing of the secret paintings!

  10. Don Michael, Jr. Said:

Thanks, Deborah. I’m glad you got the card before you left. Merry Christmas. -Don
