Weekend Events

March 5th, 2012

In the midst of my many projects I took time out last week to prepare for and then take part in the downtown Las Vegas art event, First Friday. Here is what my wall inside of the Blue Sky Yoga Gallery looked like…

And here’s what my wall in the gallery outside of the Blue Sky Yoga Gallery looked like…

We had a pretty decent turnout this month which always leads to some wonderful conversations on art. I even made a couple of small sales – which almost garnered enough to pay the rent. :-)  The highlight of my night occurred when my friend, Cheryl, noticed that there was a painting of her hanging on my wall. I think the highlight of her night was when she found out that the painting was in fact hers to do with as she pleased. Here she is with her new painting…

I didn’t get home until quite late Friday night, but there would be no sleeping in for me on Saturday. I had to get up and prepare for a ‘Meet and Greet’ at the Michael’s Arts & Crafts store where I teach Acrylic Painting Classes. This was an opportunity for all of the Michael’s instructors to spend time with the customers, letting them know about our classes. Happily, I ended up with 3 new students, two of which have already signed up for two classes. So, I’d call that a couple hours well spent.

The rest of the weekend was spent with the family and on freelance projects. One of those projects is approaching the halfway point which is where all the real fun begins. I’ll share more when I can…

Happy Creating!

You are so busy! What a magnificent display. the variety of scale is so cool. Cheryl looks like her painting (or visa versa!)
I will be looking forward to finding out more about the freelance project!

Hi Don! Aw, I love Cheryl with Cheryl…how special. Your walls looked fantastic. You are amazing at what you do. I will bet you are an excellent teacher too.

I echo Celeste. What an amazing photo that wall is. The painting that stands out for me there is the lighting with the door in it. I’m betting that’s sold! I’ve noticed none are framed… is this for aesthetic reasons? I was in an expensive gallery the other day and I was reminded of your work. The thing I took away most was the sheer size and neatness of the frames and general quality of “presentation”. Made me think.

Celeste… Busy, indeed! But, having fun with it all. Thank you!

Lisa… Thank you! Cheryl was so cute about her painting. She’s so good at giving, but receiving makes her quite self-conscious.

Mark… Thank you. I’ve sold a lot of prints of “Door to the Sky” but the original is still mine for now. Yes, I made a conscious choice several years ago to not frame these paintings. I create them on gallery wrapped canvas and then finish the edges in black. Thankfully, this is an accepted practice in most juried shows and galleries, so it’s not been an issue. Once a painting is purchased the new owner is free to frame it as they like. Interestingly enough I’ve noticed that most of my collectors have seemed content with the paintings the way they are.

The “Wall of the Don” looks wonderful, can’t say I’m surprised. The variety in size really does make it easier for a customer to find something affordable. I want to know if you take daily vitamins? Your energy is exhausting!! The finished edges on your canvas works, why muck it up with framing? I agree with your collectors :)

Robin… Thank you. I’ve always heard that “variety is the spice of life”. I guess I’m a little spicy. :-P BTW, I’m glad you agree with yourself… ;-)

What a feast for the eyes, Don! I like the way you arranged your wall with the small among the large… it’s very visually appealing!

Thanks, Deborah! It’s fun to ‘mix it up’.
