Wherewithal – 20″x24″ – Acrylic on canvas – Completed 4/16/13

©2013, Don Michael, Jr.

This is one of those paintings that I’ll let speak for itself. I will say though that it was a LOT of fun to create – and upon its completion I can hardly wait to start on the next one.

But, that will have to wait a few days… Currently, I’m in the middle of creating new artwork for a book cover. Not only that, but tomorrow will be spent setting up, displaying and then breaking down an art exhibit at the SpringHill Suites Las Vegas North (about which you can read more about here). I will be displaying four of my paintings mixed in with the artwork of a few other Las Vegas area artists.

For now, I will revel in the joy of finishing a new work – but only for a few minutes. It’s late and I’m tired…

I leave you with this detail:

I’ll have to think about the meaning of this. The stairs (which are fantastic) are gonna be tough on that turtle.

I tried “schmeering” during my last painting. I don’t have the hang of of it–it took me too long to decide where I should put the schmeer. Mine is more like blobbing!

Hallie… I’m thinking the turtle should just turn down the center of the road and he’ll be able to get right up to the top of those stairs with no problem. 🙂 I understand your dilemma about schmeer placement. I start each blank canvas with one purpose in mind, cover up the white. As I get towards the end of covering the white I start paying a little more attention to the strokes/blobs. But, I try really hard not to get too specific. I really like the randomness. Happy Blobbing!

Hi Suz! Great to hear from you. I’m quite well, thanks. Been really busy with several projects – mostly freelance graphic design, but also some fine art, too. I think I can relate to that turtle. He seems to be plodding along, but with a determination and confidence that he’ll get where he’s going right on time. 🙂
