Irresistible

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on March 25th, 2014 in Animals, Over the Under-Schmeerings

Over the past year-and-a-half I have painted several different wildcats – including tigers, ocelots, leopards, cheetahs, and lions – among others. Recently someone asked me why I didn’t paint domestic cats. To be quite honest, I just hadn’t really thought about it… but, in the infamous words of Barney Stinson of tv’s How I Met Your Mother, “Challenge accepted!”

The subject of this cat portrait is my very own Franz Marc, seen below enjoying his morning devotional. He has been my studio cat for nearly 4 years now and no project can be considered complete until it has received his stamp of approval. Thankfully, even this one passed…

Feathered Up

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on February 26th, 2014 in Mask Paintings, Over the Under-Schmeerings

I spent almost every bit of my creative energy on the St. Jude sculpture during the month of February. (I’ll post more on that soon.) What this did was put me behind on a few of my design projects AND caused me to not paint anything for myself. So, I remedied the painting part of that dilemma last night…

The inspiration for this painting came from my Facebook friend, Tracy Friberg. She recently posted a ‘selfie’ of herself getting ready for Mardi Gras. I loved the photo and requested permission to use it in one of my Over the Under-Schmeering paintings. Tracy graciously concurred. Thank you, Tracy!

Below is Tracy’s photo. You can see that I did not stray far from her original image. I love the richness of the colors in her photo. Beautiful shot, Tracy!

Now it’s time for me to get caught up on some of those design projects.

Thru the Storm

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on January 28th, 2014 in Over the Under-Schmeerings, Sunflowers

The promise of hope, joy and peace are wonderfully illustrated when a storm cloud breaks apart and the sun shines thru. Here is my attempt to symbolize that feeling in paint…

Higher Call

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on January 24th, 2014 in Over the Under-Schmeerings

Several people have asked me recently why there weren’t more lions in my wildcat series. Being the introspective type, I took a long, hard look at both the series and my intentions – and I realized something… It’s a lot easier to create portraits of cheetahs, leopards, ocelots and tigers because of the markings on their faces. Those markings give me a ‘leg up’ compositionally right from the start. In effect, I was taking the easy way out by primarily focussing on those spotted and striped felines. How cowardly of me…

So, I painted a lion…

Coco

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on November 20th, 2013 in Commissions, Over the Under-Schmeerings

I got a text early this morning letting me know that my latest commissioned painting has arrived and is now hanging in its new home…

Coco

Coco – 20″16″ – Acrylic on canvas – Completed 11/11/13

My understanding is that I will be getting a photo in the near future of the real Coco sitting with her new portrait. I look forward to seeing it.

This commission was arranged thru the director of the Gina M Woodruff Gallery in Long Beach, CA. (Thank you, Gina!) The painting itself ended up going to Edmond, OK. An interesting side note (to me, anyway) is that this is the second painting of mine to end up in Edmond, OK in the past couple years. And, as far as I know, the people that own them don’t even know each other. Our world continues to get smaller and smaller…

On the Wings of a Dream

For the Fourth year in a row I am donating a painting to Circus Couture where it will be auctioned off. As with each year, all funds raised will be donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation who in turn writes a grant directly to The Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases of Las Vegas. I consider it an honor to be able to take part in this event which features top circus performers and dancers from shows on the Las Vegas strip, fine art from local professional artists, and the finest high fashion and runway models. You can find out more about the event and their mission by going to the Circus Couture professional page on Facebook. While you’re there be sure to give them a LIKE.

For this year’s painting I wanted to ‘tip my hat’ to the wonderful Cirque du Soleil performers, many of whom donate their time and talents to Circus Couture. My friend, Julia Parrot, who is a wonderful artist and a former Cirque performer, gave me permission to use a frame from a video she created using some of the performers from the Cirque du Soleil show, KA. You can see her video here. It’s really cool, so be sure to check it out.

Here is the painting I came up with…

Something very special to me about this painting is that the lovely lady pictured is a major driving force behind Circus Couture. I tip my hat to you, Erica, and thank you for all that you do for our children here in Las Vegas. God Bless You!

As I was finishing up this painting the song Beautiful Stranger by Rebecca St. James came on Pandora. The lyrics for that song really touched me and I feel they fit well with what Circus Couture stands for. I hope you enjoy…

Do you see me?
The questions in her eyes
Do you relate to the pain I can’t disguise?
Oh, look beyond what you see
The outside is not all there is

Won’t You tell me now when did I see
You in need of water?
Oh, and tell me now, when did I see You
Hungry on the street?

God, I hear You calling out to me
In the voices of the least of these
Calling me to reach beyond my world
To the beautiful stranger, beautiful stranger

He does not look like everyone else
Does not fit in anywhere I know
You ask me to be Your hands
And show him now that he is loved

Won’t You tell me now when did I see
You in need of water?
Oh, and tell me now, when did I see You
Hungry on the street?

God, I hear You calling out to me
In the voices of the least of these
Calling me to reach beyond my world

There’s beauty that lies deep within
Waiting to be discovered
God help me see what You see
The diamond in the stone

You in need of water
Tell me now, when did I see You
Hungry on the street?

God, I hear You calling out to me
In the voices of the least of these
Calling me to reach beyond my world
To the beautiful stranger, beautiful stranger

God, I hear You calling out to me
In the voices of the least of these
Calling me to reach beyond my world
To the beautiful stranger, beautiful stranger

In the Light

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on August 25th, 2013 in Over the Under-Schmeerings, Sunflowers

As Life after Donald continues, so too does my series of Sunflowers…

In the Light

As I was painting this one and meditating on our new family situation, the song In the Light by DC Talk came up on my iTunes. This song has always moved me, but I could really relate to the chorus this time:

I wanna be in the light

As you are in the light

I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens

Oh, lord be my light and be my salvation

Cause all I want is to be in the light

All I want is to be in the light

I know Donald is in the light. I know that someday I’ll join him. Until that day, I know I will miss him daily. Oh, how I miss him.

Each day is a challenge, but I know I can make it because I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me (Phillipians 4:13).

And in faith I know that one day I’ll be able to say once again with a truly cheerful heart, Happy Creating!

Role Model

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on August 18th, 2013 in Over the Under-Schmeerings, Sunflowers

I’m continuing the sunflower motif I began last week. This week I decided to incorporate the sunflower into one of my Over the Under-Schmeerings (OTUS) paintings. Here’s what I came up with…

I want to thank everyone who has left such wonderful comments regarding this new series. I’m still not able to correspond coherently or individually with each of you, yet. Just know that your comments, thoughts and prayers continue to be a source of strength to me and to my family. God Bless!

Not Easily Dissuaded

Posted by Don Michael, Jr. on July 8th, 2013 in Over the Under-Schmeerings

There is a certain look that crosses the face of my studio cat, Franzie, that tells me he’s on a mission. That mission could be regarding an insect he has seen fly by – or, sometimes it’s associated with a rubber band that needs thrown around until it sinks into his water bowl. Either way, I know when that look is in his eye there will be no relaxing until his mission is complete. That look is a sure sign that from whatever mischief he’s up to, he is Not Easily Dissuaded.

That same look is in the eyes of this leopard in my latest Over the Under-Schmeerings (OTUS) painting. I would definitely not want to be on the other end of that stare…
